High Court Supports Shoot to Kill Families Right to Truth

Statement issued by Relatives for Justice on behalf of the families affected by the RUC’s shoot to kill policy.

Speaking on behalf of the families Tommy Carroll, brother of Roddy Carroll said:

“We families welcome today’s strong judgement by Justice Gillen supporting families right to truth and rejecting the Chief Constable’s attempts at cover up.

“Justice Gillen has directed that the families receive all relevant parts of the Stalker and Sampson reports.

“We will now have access to the reports which tell us the truth about how our loved ones were killed. And tell us the truth of how their killings were planned and covered up. All we have ever wanted was the truth. My mother Theresa is in her 70s, she needs this. Other families have had members of their families pass away before they got sight of these reports. This judgement is bitter sweet in that context.

“We sincerely hope that we can now – at last – after over 25 years – move speedily to convening the inquests into the deaths of our loved ones.

“Equally we hope that the Chief Constable Matt Baggott accepts this judgement accepts our right to truth, and stops wasting tax payers money trying to keep the truth from the families and the public and co-operates fully with this judgement.”
