Claudy comments contribute to broader debate on the past

Martin McGuinness’s comments in relation to Claudy are unambiguous and rightly forthright. They make a very important contribution to the need to deal with our collective past and we would hope that they in someway assist healing the hurts of those bereaved and injured.

That past involved three key sets of protagonists each responsible for actions that claimed lives and injured people. Therefore singular focus on the actions of the IRA would be a missed opportunity for the much needed political generosity and matched leadership shown by McGuinness in terms of acknowledgement and recognition on the part of others signaling genuine intentions to finally address the past through an independent process.
